I did it. I talked to my boss and told him I’m gonna do it – I want to take some time off and go abroad. I told him I’d like to take a sabbatical.
My boss didn’t know what a sabbatical was, so I told him that it’s a timeout from work. It’s not uncommon or unheared of in our time and age.
I almost didn’t believe it but it worked. My boss is someone – and I’m very grateful for that – that you can talk to. Of course he took time to think about it and of course he didn’t say yes immediately. However, in the end we were able to come to an understanding.
There are different ways to take a sabbatical. I’m a normal employee at a company where in the area I work I’m the first to take a sabbatical. The easiest way for us to go about this was to take a non-payed vacation. I was allowed to set up a contract, the headquarters accepted it and my boss signed it. Afterall I do want my job back – I have a lot of freedom at the work I do and I didn’t want to resign.
Everything else I gotta handly myself
- I have to see that my insurances know about my absence
- I can plan my journey however I want
- I have to find a place to store all my stuff
- And I gotta look out that I’m financially stable
